A diet high in fruits and vegetables may be good for both your body and your teeth. While they’re no substitute for brushing your teeth, crunchy, raw fruits and vegetables can help rub plaque away as you chew. In particular, strawberries and pineapple are two fruits that have been claimed to help whiten your teeth.

1. Strawberry Juice

However, there is no evidence that eating pineapples produces the same effect.

3. Brushing with baking soda

Baking soda can gently polish away stains on the surface of the teeth. Some people worry that baking soda is too harsh and may grind away enamel, but research from 2017 found it to be a safe way to remove stains. Furthermore, another study in the same medical journal examining 270 subjects over five clinical studies concluded that toothpaste containing a higher concentration of baking soda consistently removed more plaque than dentifrices with lower amounts.

But the whitening powers of baking soda may extend even further: a third experiment carried out by the Journal of Clinical Dentistry  suggests that toothpaste containing baking soda and hydrogen peroxide may harbour stain-preventing properties.

Baking soda may also help to fight bacteria, which suggests that it may be able to reduce plaque and prevent tooth decay.

4. Using hydrogen peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is a mild bleach that can help to whiten stained teeth. For optimal whitening, a person can try brushing with a mix of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide for 1–2 minutes twice a day for a week. They should only do this occasionally.

5. Use Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar has been used for centuries as a disinfectant and natural cleaning product.

Acetic acid, which is the main active ingredient in apple cider vinegar, effectively kills bacteria. The antibacterial property of vinegar is what makes it useful for cleaning your mouth and whitening your teeth .

7. Sugar-free Gum

There is significant amount of scientific research that supports the teeth whitening power of sugar-free gum. In a two-week experiment, gum-chewers were found to reduce external stains on their teeth by an average of 43%, regardless of the gum base polymer or flavour.

Overall, the research also showed that gum reduced the overall yellowness of the patients’ teeth. However, this ability to remove stains isn’t the only way gum benefits cosmetic teeth whitening. In 2010, a study in the British Dental Journal discovered that when consumed in tandem with an in-office teeth-whitening treatment, sugar-free gum reduced the intensity of the patient’s subsequent tooth sensitivity.

8.Trying oil pulling

Oil pulling is the term for washing the mouth with oil to remove dirt, bacteria, and debris. It is not a substitute for regular brushing or flossing, but some research suggests that washing the mouth with certain oils may help to whiten the teeth.

Research in the Journal of Dentistry  warns that anionic polyphenols, present in highly pigmented food and beverages, react with the thin film that forms when surfaces interact with saliva, forming thick stains on the tooth’s surface.


It’s even more critical to avoid highly pigmented, acidic beverages immediately after bleaching. Researchers found that bleached teeth exacerbated the degree and kind of tooth stains.  That doesn’t mean you have to completely avoid them, but you should limit the amount of time these substances are in contact with your teeth.

If possible, drink beverages known to stain teeth out of a straw to prevent direct contact with your teeth. Additionally, avoid smoking and chewing tobacco, both of which can cause tooth discoloration.

13. Making dietary changes

Eliminating foods that mark the teeth can prevent further staining. Foods and beverages that contain tannins, such as wine and tea, can stain the teeth. Coffee and dark sodas and juices can also stain them.
